Spank, Sparle & Growl was recently reviewed in Gonzo Magazine, by John Kereiff.
Here's what he had to say:
“SPANK, SPARKLE & GROWL” Ginger St. James & The Grinders (SFP) *** ½
How do you make the transition from burlesque entertainer to serious singer? Apparently, just like this. St. James and her band combine burlesque’s joi de vivre with the dark undercurrents of the blues on this exhilarating e.p.
She was born and raised a farm girl, but you’d never know it from these six tracks. “SS&G” reminds me of the records Maria Muldaur now makes- cheeky and bluesy, music for folks who drink, dance, work two jobs and need to unwind at the first opportunity. These songs, mostly written by St. James, are sassy and lots of fun. As the bio says she’s “an entertainer who demands that her audience laughs and dances their asses off.” After a few times through this, yeah… I can totally see that.
HOT SPOTS: “Swing About You”, “Boom Boom Room”, “Don’t Deceive Me”
Be sure to check out Ginger St. James at an upcoming performances
